2:49 PM Sunday and it rains and it shines here in Hackney. Head off with wife to the Transit Gallery (it's just round the corner, not really make much of an effort on the art front today) to see Simon Faithfull's show. For once a listings mag, maybe Timeout (?), had actually done a write up that made you want to go and see something rather than just thinking the writer's a complete tosser and it was well worth it. Three pictures of the artist's dog, Carter, reproduced on the gallery walls using white and licquorice cigarette papers (show's called Dog Ends) following a bitmap 1-bit grid which the blurb somewhere tells me were originally drawn on a palm pilot. I know the dog is called Carter because we bumped into Melanie and Billie who happened to be there at the same time as us. Billie told me she'd played with Carter quite proudly. This is OK though as Billie is a small child. There's a good write up on Artforum.

Yesterday around trying to fix broken things at the place New York friend Julie's staying - failed to fix computer (me: "No idea. It's a PC.") and broken telephone (me: "No idea. It's not working though, I can tell you that.") - went to see Bob and Roberta Smith at the Anthony Wilkinson Gallery and it was also fantastic. The usual grumpy signs painted on to board, the walls and canvases ("Patti Smith is a pumpkin head") and an upstairs space where visitors are invited to have a go and if you don't make something decent then Bob/Roberta will come round and stick a "broom handle up your cat's arse." Spookily predictive of Roy Keane's words to Ireland manager Mick McCarthy "You can stick it up your bollocks" earlier this week. Bought the CD of the band Bob Smith is in - it was only a fiver and sounds like a madder but also mellower Fall. Maybe there's a connection in the anonymity of being mouthy and being called Smith (Mark E. Smith and Bob/Roberta Smith).

Guy Barker - Soundtrack Probably Barker's best so far. I saw him years ago in Birmingham playing, I think, as part of a back up band for Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson. He wore a crap double breasted suit in a sort of gangster noirish style. He might not look it but the music is beautiful.

Pirates Choice - Orchestra Baobab The original Pirates Choice vinyl album makes up disc one of this two-CD set of the same name at the bargain price of 11.99 UKP. Saw them twice with Damian this year and they were magnificent. If you buy it and don't like it we'll send you something else (of our choice).

Opera Heroes - Tito Gobbi 16 tracks including Rossini, Donizetti, Verdi and other Ninja Turtles. Highly recommended at 8.99 UKP.

Lester Young story: Lester Young - 4 disc set of early Lester. Where Jazz Giants has the appealing weariness this is prime exuberant tenor playing mostly from the pre-war years.

Powers of Horror: Julia Kristeva
Since the book club folded I no longer have to read dreadful books like White Teeth (see below). So instead this month's recommended book is Kristeva's essay on abjection. Typical quote: "A weight of meaningless, about which there is nothing insignificant, and which crushes me." You won't find a better gift this Christmas.
The Monstrous Feminine: Barbara Creed
As Annette Kuhn wrote of this book: "By reinstating the repressed mother and femme castratice in classic Freudian theory, and by extending Julia Kristeva's discussion of horror and abjection ... Barbara Creed accessibly and convincingly demonstrates the relevance and productivity of psychoanalytic theory for cultural analysis". Go girl!
White Teeth: Zadie Smith
This is next month's book club title and has had amazingly good reviews. From the piece I read in the New York review of Books, which gives way too much plot away, it sounds funny and sad at the same time with darkly comic characters.
A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius: Dave Eggers
Dave Egger's parents died from cancer within a month of each other when he was 21 and his brother, Christopher was seven. They left the Chicago suburb where they had grown up and moved to San Francisco. This book tells the story of their life together. Highly recommended. (Last month's book club title)
Sarah: J.T. LeRoy
A previous book club title that Yol suggested. It tells the story of a male prostitute working the parking lots at truck stops. "Cheery and upbeat, a life reaffirming read".
Designing Web Usability: Jakob Nielsen
Lunatic or nutter. You decide.
Information Architecture for the World Wide Web: Louis Rosenfeld and Peter Morville
Less ranty than Jakob, a good solid read, will impress flakey clients.
